The 9th Infantry was the last division to go into Vietnam and the first division to leave. Their area of operations was the Mekong Delta, located south of Saigon. This was the birthplace of the People Liberation Front who rose up against the French in 1954 and later in the 60's against the South Vietnamese.
49% of the population were Viet Cong. The US had stayed out of this area until 1967 when they had to sent in a division.
The 3/60th was one of the three battalions (2/60, 3/60, and 5/60 Mech) that were activated at Fort Riley, Kansas, and assigned to the 9th Infantry Division for its deployment to the Republic of Vietnam in December 1966. The division was the only major U.S. combat unit to conduct operations in the Mekong Delta. The battalions of the 60th participated in both Riverine operations and "jitterbug tactics" which featured split-second timing of airmobile insertions in close proximity to enemy units. These operations won the battalions unit citations and campaign streamers, including one Presidential Unit Citation. Although they were only in Vietnam 30 months they were the only division to receive two US President Citations. US casualties topped 60%. Their were 10 Medal of Honor awarded to the 9th Division, 4 of which were from this unit, 3/60th
